Exercise Physio – Support Budget Types

Understanding how to use your NDIS funding for exercise can often be confusing.

Once your NDIS plan is approved, you need to understand different budgets, who can help you start using your plan, and how your plan is managed.

This is a brief explanation of how our exercise physiology approved NDIS services can be used in relation to your budget and to learn more about our Melbourne based NDIS Provider supports

This service can be funded by your NDIS package under the following support categories:

  • Capacity BuildingImproved Daily Living Skills
  • Capacity Building - Improved Health and Wellbeing
  • Core - Assistance with Daily Life

The Support Budget Types

There are three types of support budgets that may be funded in NDIS plans:

  • Core Supports
  • Capacity Building Supports
  • Capital Supports

Your funding is based on what is ‘reasonable and necessary’ to achieve your goals in addition to the support provided by family friends and other community and government services.

Using your Capacity Support Budget for Exercise Goals.

Capacity Building Supports help build your independence and skills to help you reach your long-term goals. Unlike your Core Supports budget, your Capacity Building Supports budget cannot be moved from one support category to another.

Funding can only be used for approved individual supports that fall within that Capacity Building category.

If you have funding in your Improved Daily Living or Health & Wellbeing and exercise aligns with your goals, working with an Exercise Physiologist is the best approach.

Capacity Building and Exercise Physiology Services

The capacity building support services that exercise physiology services includes the following support categories.

  • Improved Daily Living Skills
    • As allied health professionals, this support category includes assessment, training, strategy development and/or therapy (including Early Childhood Intervention) supports to assist the development or increase a participant’s skills and/or capacity for independence and community participation. Supports can be delivered to individuals or groups.
  • Improved Health and Wellbeing
    • Physical Wellbeing Activities. These activities support, maintain or increase physical mobility or well-being through personal training or exercise physiology. Physical well-being activities promote and encourage improved physical capacity and health.

NDIS Support Items and Exercise Physiology Services

Each support category has many specific supports and services that are recognised with participants NDIS plans. These are referred to as ‘support items’ and are, in most cases, not prescribed in participant plans.

Since 2019, the NDIS Support Catalogue has Exercise Physiology included in the Improved Daily Living Skills Category in addition to the Improved Health and Wellbeing Category, creating more opportunity for choice and control for NDIS participants to get the help of an exercise physiologist that will help optimise their health outcomes and quality of life.

If as part of your NDIS plan an exercise physiologist could help you reach your goals, our team can currently offer the following services items as listed under the support catalogue.

NDIS Funding can be used for individual advice to a participant regarding exercise required due to the impact of their disability.

The full NDIS pricing guide and limits can be found here - https://www.ndis.gov.au/providers/pricing-arrangements

Who sets NDIS exercise physio costs?

As with all fees associated with the scheme, NDIS exercise physiology fees are set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIS regulates service fees – including prices for exercise physio – to help ensure participants get good value for money from their supports and adequate funding to help support them.

The costs for different supports are published in a document on the NDIS Govt Website which was previously known as the ‘NDIS Price Guide’ but is now called ‘NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits’. This document is available to NDIS participants and support providers to help them understand how pricing controls for support and services work under the NDIS.
