Hi, and welcome to The FITMUMS Physio!


My name is Amy Laurie and I am a physiotherapist who specializes in Women’s Health, more specifically the prenatal and postnatal health of women. I am also clinically trained in Pilates and a mum of 3 gorgeous kids - Hannah (born in 2016), Chloe (born in 2019) and Thomas (born in 2021).


Across my career as a physiotherapist, I have always had an interest in working with women but after having our first daughter Hannah in 2016 my passion was well and truly ignited. I made the decision to undergo further training in the Women's Health field and with the support of my wonderful mothers group I created The FITMUMS Physio. 


I feel very privileged that I, together with our amazing allied health team, get to support and assist pregnant women and new mums during an immense period of physical, emotional and mental change and growth.

 

We teach women, both pregnant and postnatal, how to safely strengthen the muscles around their pelvis, back and abdominal areas to ensure they feel strong and fit for pregnancy, birth and beyond. At MVFIT - The FITMUMS Physio we offer Clinical Pilates classes as well as Strength and Cardio Fitmums Circuit sessions. All classes are overseen by me, a women's health physiotherapist and all our staff are well equipped to safely train women in the perinatal stages.

I am a Mum of three beautiful children - Hannah (in 2016), Chloe (in 2019) and Thomas (2021). Since becoming a mother I became extremely passionate about helping women build their strength and improve their health during pregnancy as well as supporting new mothers to rehabilitate their bodies after birth and assist them to feel more comfortable in their new bodies.

The FITMUMS Physio | Prenatal Exercise 

Prenatal / Pregnancy Exercise Classes


During pregnancy, your body goes through immense changes to accommodate for the life growing inside you. With the changing shape of your body and the added effects of pregnancy hormones, it is very common to experience aches and pains in pregnancy.

At the FITMUMS Physio we show all our clients how to safely perform all exercises and can make modifications to account for the changes in your body in each trimester of pregnancy.

Our pregnant clients can attend the following class types:

- Clinical Pilates - these classes have a maximum of 4 people per class, with each person having their own personalized program that can be modified or progressed depending on their individual needs. 

- FITMUMs Pre & Postnatal Circuit - these classes incorporate a combination of strength, cardiovascular and core based exercises in our private gym.

In all our group exercise classes, you'll never have to wonder if what you’re doing is safe as, and you'll also get to meet other amazing mum's in the local area.

Post-Natal / Physio Exercise Classes


There is often a lot of confusion around when to start exercising after the birth of your baby, as well as what type of exercise is okay and at what intensity.

That's why we offer my post natal gym classes.

The postnatal period, or approximately the year following delivery, is a time where special consideration is required when recommencing exercise. There are many situations and conditions that require exercise modification in the early weeks or months following delivery, as every woman will have had a different pregnancy and birthing experience.

At MVFit our new mums can access 2 types of exercise classes:

- Clinical Pilates - small group classes with a maximum of 4 participants. Each person has their own individual program that includes a range of exercises using our Pilates equipment (Rreformer, Wunda chair, Cadillac) as well as dumb-bells, swiss balls and resistance bands.

Pilates is a great place to begin when returning to exercise after having a baby as it targets the smaller core stabilizing muscles which are very important for returning good pelvic function as well as maintaining good posture, preventing back and joint injury/pain as well as returning to higher level activities like running.

- FITMUMS Pre & Postnatal Circuit - these sessions are a combination of strength, cardiovascular and core based exercises. And do not let the word circuit confuse you, all our classes can be modified to suit the individual needs of each woman. At the FITMUMS Physio we are very aware that every woman has their own unique journey in pregnancy, birth and post-partum. There is no one size fits all when it comes to pregnant and postnatal women and exercise.

My Pre and Postnatal FITMUMS classes are designed specifically with the pregnant woman and new mother in mind.

I am a Women's Health Physiotherapist that is an expert in prenatal and postnatal fitness and rehabilitation - this is NOT a one-size-fits-all approach.

All our classes are in a private gym and Pilates studio.

I work together with an experienced team of allied health professionals including physiotherapists and exercise physiologists and exercise scientists. We are all experts when it comes to prescribing exercises suitable for pregnant and postnatal women. 

At MVFIT - the FITMUMS Physio our goal is to allow women to stay fit and strong during their pregnancy and to assist new mothers to regain their health and fitness following the birth of their baby.

Our small group Clinical Pilates classes see all our participants prescribed an individualized program that incorporates a combination of our Pilates equipment (reformer, wunda chair and cadillac) as well as mat based exercises using swiss balls, weights and resistance bands. 

Each client has a program designed to adhere to their individual goals but with an underlying focus on core stability exercises, abdominal and gluteal strengthening, mobility and pelvic floor strengthening exercises. 

All programs are overseen by our Director and Head Physiotherapist Amy Laurie, who has been a Clinical Pilates teacher for 10years. 

Our Clinical Pilates program is very suitable for pregnancy and beyond and has been endorsed by Obstetricians with you and your baby in mind.

Our qualified staff will guide you through your exercises slowly and thoroughly while also providing education on the reasoning behind each exercise to give you the confidence, strength and knowledge on all things related to your body and goals.

Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy 

At the FITMUMS Physio, you have a physiotherapist who is an expert in the management of conditions unique to women.

The breast, pelvic and abdominal regions all undergo change following the conception, development and delivery of a health baby. 

During pregnancy and/or after the delivery of a baby/s women can develop issues with their pelvic floor function such as bladder and/or bowel incontinence, constipation, bladder urgency, pelvic pain just to name a few.

In addition to this, women also notice a change in the tone, shape and function of their abdominal muscles, for example they may have retained a separation in their abdominal muscles known as a Diastasis Rectus.

Another common issue presented to women following the birth of their child relates to their breasts and the development of blocked ducts which can sometimes manifest into mastitis.

Our team of Physiotherapists are specialized in women's health and are here to support pregnant and post-natal women in finding the best solution to any issues that may have arisen in pregnancy, delivery and/or the post-partum period.
