R U Ok? Suicide Prevention 2017 R U OK? Day is an annual day in September (today, 14/9) dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and colleagues the question, "R U OK?", in a meaningful way, because connecting regularly and meaningfully is one thing everyone can do to make a difference and even save lives. We have built a fantastic fitness community here at Moonee Valley Health and Fitness and we are proud to support R U OK? Day and promoting their cause. By encouraging meaningful conversations about mental health and wellbeing, R U OK? strives to create better connections among peers, helping to improve support networks for those who are struggling, and ultimately prevent suicide. How to start the conversation and ask R U OK? Often we don’t ask because we’re not sure how. These conversations can sometimes be difficult, so it’s important to learn some ways to approach the situation. The R U OK website (https://www.ruok.org.au/) provides detailed resources to guide you through the process, along with lots of great ideas for creating conversations at school and in the workplace. Diabetes Week 2017 Diabetes Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness about all types of diabetes and how this condition affects Australians. This year, Diabetes Victoria and Exercise & Spots Science Australia (ESSA) have both launched digital awareness campaigns to coincide with National Diabetes Week 2017 (9-15 July). Diabetes Victoria - Our Invisible Condition Directed to all people affected by, or at risk of, diabetes. ESSA - Don’t Sugar Coat Diabetes Aims to raise awareness of risk factors leading to the development of diabetes. You cannot see if somebody has diabetes with around 1.7 million Australians living with diabetes. This includes over 1.2 million people registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme, as well as an estimated 500,000 with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Heart Week 2017 - 30 Apr to 6 May This year Heart Week is 30 April to 6 May, and the focus is about the importance of diagnosing and treating high blood pressure. We want to encourage you and your friends / family / work colleague to talk to your local health and fitness professionals about blood pressure testing, what the results mean and what the next steps are in managing the results if they are high. The National Heart Foundation of Australia has released new hypertension guidelines that will give you the most up-to-date advice on the diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure. You won’t know you have high blood pressure until you have it checked. There are no signs and symptoms. The good news is that high blood pressure, or hypertension, can be controlled. High blood pressure, or hypertension, remains the leading risk factor for heart disease. Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney disease. Speak to your doctor or come into our clinic and speak with our Exercise Physiologist today about checking your blood pressure and keeping it heart-healthy. Why is my blood pressure measure important? Blood pressure is the pressure of blood on the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it around the body. It naturally goes up and down all the time adjusting to the heart’s needs and what you’re doing. Your health professional takes your blood pressure to check it is at a normal healthy level. It also celebrates the Accredited Exercise Physiologist and their mission in empowering people to exercise right for who they are and their condition. During Exercise Right Week, why not start talking to your patients and clients about exercise and how its prescription, in many cases, can be more beneficial than the prescription of medication to prevent and treat chronic conditions.
