Diabetes Week 2017

Diabetes Week 2017 Diabetes Week is a great opportunity to raise awareness about all types of diabetes and how this condition affects Australians. This year, Diabetes Victoria and Exercise & Spots Science Australia (ESSA) have both launched digital awareness campaigns to coincide with National Diabetes Week 2017 (9-15 July). Diabetes Victoria - Our Invisible Condition Directed to all people affected by, or at risk of, diabetes. ESSA - Don’t Sugar Coat Diabetes Aims to raise awareness of risk factors leading to the development of diabetes. Diabetes Victoria - Our Invisible Condition Diabetes is an invisible condition that doesn’t discriminate. People with diabetes can affect all ages, genders and ethnicities. You cannot see if somebody has diabetes with around 1.7 million Australians living with diabetes. This includes over 1.2 million people registered with the National Diabetes Services Scheme, as well as an estimated 500,000 with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) - Don't Sugar Coat Diabetes Don't Sugar Coat Diabetes aims to educate the Australian public on how implementing exercise into their everyday life can reduce the risks of developing related chronic conditions, as well as make symptoms more manageable for those already diagnosed. Exercise Physiology and Diabetes

Everybody benefits from regular exercise. If you have diabetes, or are at risk of diabetes it plays an important role in keeping you health. In Victoria, there are currently 300,000 people living with diabetes and every day, around 70 Victorians develop the condition. Diabetes Victoria offers great support groups for people living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes. As Exercise Physiologists we often get asked many questions about how physical activity can help diabetes management and to dispel myths associated with being active. Below we help explain the benefits that exercise has with diabetes management and answer some of the most frequently asked questions about how and why physical activity is beneficial. What is Diabetes? Diabetes is the name given to a group of conditions in which there is too much glucose (sugar) in the blood. Glucose is the body’s main source of fuel or energy. National Diabetes Week 2016 This year Diabetes Australia will be highlighting the tragedy of diabetes-related amputations. Every year, more than 4,400 amputations are carried out as a result of diabetes. We need to do more to reduce the impact of diabetes.
