Boot Camps: Are the boot camp sessions military style?2019-08-16T14:37:47+11:00

No – we don’t scream or yell and intimidate people. We are here to coach and motivate you so you can achieve your goals in a fun and friendly environment. Our trainers are university qualified fitness professionals, not ex-military drill sergeants or reality show fitness trainers trying to make a tv show. Screaming and pushing you until your on your hands and knees throwing up isn’t an effective way to reach your goals (although it does make for good reality tv).

Our 45 minute workouts are based around scientific research on what works in the real world. Our results speak for themselves.

Boot Camps: What does your Boot camp sessions consist of?2019-08-16T15:24:33+11:00

Every session is different, and we have a large range of fitness equipment to use. We do are a combination of resistance training (using kettle bells, dumb bells, battle ropes, sleds, medicine balls, Olympic rings, body weight) and high intensity cardio (bike, rower, circuits, sprints, boxing, intervals, hill/stair training) etc.
Having access to a fully equipped Personal Training studio, our boot camp sessions are able to offer more variety than other Melbourne boot camps, with a whole gym full of equipment to use. We also run boxing classes and have running groups that run down at the Maribyrnong River, at J J Holland Park in Kensington and in Essendon and Moonee Ponds.

All our workouts are designed for weight loss, functional strength and fitness. Every workout is different to keep things fun and keep challenging you as you improve. Every class is made up of a mixture of functional training, strengthening, core stability, cardio conditioning, medicine balls, resistance bands, kettlebells and full body workouts.

We also offer a free trial if you’d like to first test out our boot camp before joining.

If for any reason direct debit doesn’t suit you, let us know and we can arrange a direct bank transfer (minimum of 3 months in advance).

Yes – we do offer group discounts on our boot camps if you have 3 or more people that would like to join together.

Boot Camps: What do I need to bring with me to each boot camp class?2017-04-11T21:06:26+11:00

Just bring a bottle of water, a towel and wear some light loose comfortable clothing for you to exercise in and running shoes.

Our sessions are run in a fully equipped personal training studio, so all the equipment and everything else you need is supplied by us.

Boot Camps: Is there anywhere I can have a shower after class?2017-04-11T21:06:26+11:00

Although we do have toilets and two areas for all our clients to store their belongings in, we unfortunately do not have showers at our studio. Many of our members use the facilities at their place of work, or when they get home. We are hoping to add shower facilities to our studio soon

Boot Camps: What if I miss a boot camp class?2017-04-11T21:06:27+11:00

The boot camp is a month to month package so there are no refunds for missed classes, but having said that, you can also reschedule any session you are unable to make and you are not locked into the same sessions each week.

All new members get to trial our $99 unlimited group training so you can come to as many sessions a week as you like for the first month.

If you decide to continue on our Month-To-Month memberships (1,2 or 3 sessions per week) all you need to do is cancel your ‘booked in’ class at least 30 minutes before the start of the session to not be charged for the class. If you do cancel the class before the 30 minute lock out time you may then use that session to come to another session from our weekly timetable.

Boot Camps: What are the group numbers in your boot camps?2017-04-11T21:06:27+11:00

We make aim to keep our group fitness and boot camps relatively small with an average of 8-12 people per session. By keeping the group sizes smaller this keeps a great client to trainer ratio so you receive a far more personalised session.

Boot Camps: I’m not very fit and haven’t exercised in a while, can I still take part in your program?2017-04-11T21:06:27+11:00

Of course you can, that’s why you are coming to MV Fitness in the first place… Everyone has to start somewhere and it’s never too late to start. A lot of our members are in the same position as yourself, and we are all here to work with each other. It’s our job to get you in the best shape possible, as quickly and as safely as possible.

In each session you’ll be pushed outside of your comfort zone but never too far, all our trainers are extremely qualified with years of experience and know how to keep you motivated and injury free.

We have a few basic fitness tests we perform every few months so we can record your progress and vary the sessions so no matter what your fitness level you are always improving.

We have built a great community here at Moonee Valley Health and Fitness and everyone (including our members) are extremely supportive and encouraging at all times.

Boot Camps: Do you have outdoor boot camp classes?2017-04-11T21:06:27+11:00

We do run a portion of our boot camp classes outdoors, at our indoor/outdoor personal training studio, but it depends on the weather.

During summer we often add extra training locations and sessions at near parks and reserves in Essendon, Moonee Ponds and other locations throughout the City of Moonee Valley. The majority of sessions are held at the Moonee Valley Health and Fitness Studio, and even when we do run some of the boot camps down at Queens Park, Essendon or Travancore Park, we still have all our boot camp members start from the studio.

Boot Camps: Is it safe to participate if I have an old injury or other medical conditions?2017-04-11T21:06:28+11:00

Our team of trainers are not only personal trainers but also university qualified fitness professionals who know how to create rehabilitation programs.

We also have an exercise physiologist as one of our coaches who specialises in exercise rehabilitation.

Our Exercise Physiologist is available to help diagnose and treat your current and past injuries if there are any concerns that you are unable to fully participate in the classes. All our classes can also be modified to suit your current fitness level and abilities.

If you’re concerned with any type of health issue, it is always best to first consult your doctor before undertaking any type of fitness regimen.

Boot Camps: What do you do if it rains?2016-06-13T16:10:26+11:00

The bonus of having our boot camp at our indoor/outdoor studio is that during the winter months when it is cold and wet we can do all the training indoors at the studio. When we are in the warmer months we still start all our sessions at the studio in Ascot Vale (378 Mount Alexander Rd, Travancore VIC) but then do sometimes head down to Travancore Park or Arthur Caldwell Park (Cnr Cashmere St & Mangalore St) or over to Victory Park in Ascot Vale.

No session is ever the same, so you never know what to expect, other than an amazing workout.

Boot Camps: What if everyone else in the group is much fitter than me?2017-04-11T21:06:28+11:00

Our workouts are for all fitness levels! With dumbbells weighing from 1kg to 40kg and an entire personal training studio to train in, our boot camp is designed to challenge everyone at whatever fitness level they are.

The main objective through every workout is to challenge yourself. It’s not a competition, all our boot campers are part of the Moonee Valley Health and Fitness family, and everyone supports each other.

Remember we all have to start from somewhere.

Boot Camps: How is Crossfit different to our Group Training?2017-04-11T21:06:28+11:00

Although Crossfit is a great program when run by a good trainer, it is aimed at ‘forging elite athletes’. It does utilise a lot of the same exercises we do in our boot camp, but they also include a lot of highly technical exercises (Olympic lifts) that when performed by everyday people (who are not elite athletes or experienced lifters) and can lead to serious injury.

It really does come down to what your health and fitness goals are, and your previous training history.

Olympic lifting will make up a big part of your Crossfit WOD (Workout Of the Day) and most adults don’t make for great Olympic lifters.

It’s quite a controversial topic of why Crossfit might not be good for you, but if you are the average adult, looking to get fit and healthy the last thing we want you to do is injure yourself. Our F.A.Q section isn’t the space to go into the discussion of Crossfit and general population so if you would like more information or our professional opinion on whether Olympic Lifting is suitable for you and your goals we would be happy to help you make an informative decision.

No one here at Moonee Valley Health and Fitness argues that Crossfit workouts aren’t challenging, of course they are, but the there is a big difference between ‘hard’ and ‘smart’. In our group fitness / boot camp setting we choose less technical exercises, but create effective programs that achieve better results and keep you injury free.

If you would like to learn those technical lifts, we have a great team of experienced fitness coaches who can teach you those exercises and suggest our introductory 3 x Personal Training Sessions at a reduced rate. In those 1 on 1 sessions, you and one of our coaches will then be able to teach you suitable exercises for your current fitness level and ability.

Boot Camps: What results can I expect to see?2017-04-11T21:06:28+11:00

We have had some amazing results with our boot camp members. If you follow our nutrition plan carefully and are able to attend at least 3 boot camp classes per week you can expect to lose on average about 1kg of body fat every week.

Not only will you drop body fat but your muscles will be toned and stronger and you’ll see significant improvements in your fitness and energy levels.

Our team at Moonee Valley Health and Fitness will do everything they can to help you achieve the goals you are aiming for. Our group environment is a great way to train, but if you have any specific health and fitness goals, we also offer private personal training sessions at a reduced rate to our boot camp members. In those sessions we can help you create a specialised program which will help complement your boot camp results, and improve your results even more!

Check out some of our members success stories HERE.

Personal Training: I am currently injured. Are your trainers qualified to help with a rehabilitation program?2019-08-18T14:34:39+11:00

Yes we can help. Our team of trainers is full of university qualified fitness professionals, who have either exercise science degrees, or are accredited exercise physiologists who specialise in injury management and rehabilitation.

If you are currently seeing a Physiotherapist, Chiropractor, Osteopath or your Doctor for an injury, once they have diagnosed your injury, we can work closely with them to create a health and fitness plan suitable for you.

We are proud to be part of the Australian Exercise is Medicine Network, and all our exercise physiologists are registered with Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

With most of our team having Exercise Science Degrees and Clinical Exercise Science Degrees, we can adapt your workouts to help create a rehabilitation program for your injury and still get you working towards your health and fitness goals.

We also have an Exercise Physiologist who is an expert in the field in which you may be eligible for Medicare or Private Health rebates.

We have been experts in the health and fitness industry since 2005 and we pride ourselves on our past and current client goals and achievements.

Personal Training: Can I train with a friend?2019-08-18T14:37:36+11:00

Clinical Pilates: What happens in your one on one initial consultation?2019-01-06T11:14:41+11:00

The key to an effective program is having a practitioner with additional qualifications in Pilates assess your body in a comprehensive way. This is a one on one appointment which includes a thorough history and physical examination and tests to assist in the development of a safe and effective program.

After your initial screening and with a few focus areas identified, getting comfortable on the reformer and setting up with your 5 key elements is essential to start with. Generally we will target the lower back, pelvis, lower limb and upper limb muscle groups in order to get the whole body moving.

The second part of the initial session will generally be focused on your own individual variances and creating your clinical pilates program.

You are now ready to move in to a small group class of maximum 4 participants, or you can remain seeing your instructor with 1 on 1 appointments.

Clinical Pilates: What is a Pilates Reformer?2019-01-06T11:14:59+11:00

A reformer is a machine used in one on one assessments and classes that facilitates greater intensity and is more dynamic than matwork classes. The carriage of the reformer is loaded by 5 tensioned springs that attach to the carriage of the frame. When the carriage slides, horizontal resistance is then created.

A number of ropes and pulleys can also be attached to the carriage. These can be used to create additional resistance, or alleviate it (as required).

Exercise on a reformer builds on the existing movements of matwork and offers more variety. Exercises can be performed in a number of positions including: lying on your back or stomach, sitting, standing, kneeling, pushing a foot bar, perched on shoulder pads, feet in straps and hands in straps.

The reformers enable easy progressions for many exercises in your program, which will further challenge your core.

Clinical Pilates: The difference between your Clinical Pilates classes and the Pilates classes they run at other local gyms?2019-01-06T11:16:24+11:00

In Clinical Pilates  you are assessed clinically and a personalised program is developed for you.

Your program will focus on correcting body imbalances and strengthen of any weak areas you may have. Clinical Pilates is targeted and specific, making sure the right muscles are being used for the right movement pattern (rather than compensating with other muscle groups).  Another difference is the extent of knowledge and training that a Clinical Pilates trainer has. This allows them to clinically assess a person, adjust, modify and choose exercises and to tailor a program to the individual. Groups are kept small (max 4 participants) and each person participating in a Clinical Pilates class will work on their own personalised program.

Regular Pilates is a generalised exercise class focused on improving fitness and does not take in to account an individual’s injuries, history, pathologies and specific physiological needs. An instructor for Regular Pilates will lead a exercise program to a group where all participants do the same movements.
